Morocco Cruises Past Zambia 3-0 to Top Group A at AFCON 2025

Posted : 30 December 2025

Hosts Morocco concluded their Group A campaign in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Monday, securing their place in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16.

Ayoub El Kaabi’s brace, including another stunning bicycle kick, and Brahim Diaz’s composed finish were enough to overwhelm a limited Zambian side, eliminating them from the tournament. Meanwhile, Mali’s 0-0 draw with Comoros ensured the West Africans advanced as Group A runners-up.

El Kaabi opened the scoring in the ninth minute after a well-placed corner from Azzedine Ounahi. The striker met the lofted ball with a diving header that sailed beyond goalkeeper Willard Mwanza, giving Morocco an early lead.

Diaz doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, expertly converting a cross from Abde Ezzalzouli that had eluded El Kaabi in the center of the box.

From the opening whistle, Zambia appeared unsettled, struggling to contain Morocco’s high-pressure play. El Kaabi had an early chance at kickoff, while Ezzalzouli, introduced in the starting XI, created constant threats down the left flank.

The Real Betis winger, who spent two years at Barcelona, linked seamlessly with Diaz, giving Morocco’s attack a dynamic edge.

Zambia rarely threatened, and Morocco came close to adding a third before halftime, with Diaz narrowly missing the target following another precise delivery from Ezzalzouli. Five minutes into the second half, El Kaabi scored his second goal of the night, a spectacular bicycle kick from Ounahi’s cross, prompting celebrations across Rabat.

The match also marked the return of Achraf Hakimi from injury; the Paris Saint-Germain star entered as a 64th-minute substitute for Noussair Mazraoui. Hakimi looked lively in his comeback, providing a major boost for coach Walid Regragui, whose side had seen their world record winning streak end against Mali in matchday two.

With Morocco topping the group, they will face one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, D, or E in Rabat on January 4. Mali, as runners-up, are set to meet the likely Group C runner-up, Tunisia, in Casablanca on January 3.
