Morocco completed an unbeaten group phase campaign at the 2026 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday night. The tournament hosts secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over regional rivals Egypt at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé. This critical result confirmed Morocco as the winners of Group A with seven points from three matches. The triumph also earned both North African sides an automatic ticket to the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.
The home side established early tactical dominance and broke the deadlock in the 18th minute. Forward Mohamed Amine Moustache found the back of the net to give the Atlas Cubs a deserved lead. The hosts doubled their advantage deep into first-half injury time through a fine strike from Imran Talai. Egypt responded aggressively immediately after the halftime interval when Mohamed El Sayed pulled a goal back in the 49th minute. Morocco defended their slim lead resolutely to ensure they took maximum points.
Despite suffering the narrow defeat, Egypt still advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing second in the final standings. The Young Pharaohs edged out East African contenders Ethiopia strictly on goal difference. Meanwhile, Ethiopia produced one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament in their simultaneous group fixture against Tunisia. The match appeared to be heading toward a goalless stalemate before Binyam Abrah scored a stunning winner in the 93rd minute to seal a 1-0 victory.
The dramatic late triumph lifted the Ethiopian team level on four points with second-placed Egypt. Their inferior goal difference means they must settle for third place; they will now enter the newly introduced continental play-offs for another opportunity to secure global qualification. Tunisia finished a very disappointing tournament at the bottom of the log with just a single point. Coach Tiago Lima Pereira praised his Moroccan team for showing maturity under heavy pressure, while Egyptian handlers expressed huge relief at navigating a difficult pool.
