Morocco 2026 Qualifier: Flamingos target strong start against Guinea in Abidjan

Posted : 20 May 2026

Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, will today begin the final leg of their journey toward the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers when they depart for Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, ahead of Saturday’s clash against Guinea.

The first-leg encounter, scheduled for May 23, is part of the second-round qualification series for the global tournament billed for Morocco later this year, with Head Coach Akeem Busari confident his side is ready for the challenge.

The team is expected to travel from Lagos aboard an ASKY Airlines flight with a brief stop in Lomé, Togo, before arriving in Côte d’Ivoire for the crucial tie.

Nigeria heads into the fixture buoyed by an impressive run of preparations that has seen the Flamingos spend nearly a month in closed camping. After opening camp in Abuja, the squad later moved to Ikenne, Ogun State, where the coaching crew intensified tactical sessions and match simulations aimed at sharpening the team for competitive action.

The Flamingos also enjoyed a productive series of friendly matches during the build-up, recording convincing wins over Generation Next, Nazareth Queens, Solo Wonder Babes, Lakeside Queens FA, and YAFA U-15, while settling for a draw against Real Rising Stars SC.

The results have reflected the side’s attacking sharpness and growing cohesion, with players battling for starting roles in what has become a highly competitive camp environment.

Training sessions under Busari have focused heavily on pressing, positional movement, quick attacking transitions, and efficiency in front of goal as the technical crew seeks to build a balanced side capable of securing a positive away result.

Having claimed a historic bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India, expectations remain high for the Flamingos, who are once again aiming to qualify and compete strongly on the global stage.

Saturday’s encounter in Abidjan is expected to provide an early test of the team’s readiness as Nigeria looks to take a major step toward another World Cup appearance.

The meticulous training regimen and high scoring output during preparation matches indicate that the squad is in peak physical and tactical condition. Coach Busari will rely heavily on this built-up momentum to neutralize the Guinean threat in front of a neutral crowd. Securing a decisive victory in Abidjan will put the standard-bearers in a commanding position ahead of the return leg on home soil.

Betting Predictions

Guinea U17 vs Nigeria U17 (Flamingos)

  • Nigeria U17 to Win: Driven by a highly productive closed camp and coming off a string of convincing warm-up victories, the Flamingos carry far too much technical quality and tournament pedigree for Guinea. Expect Coach Busari's girls to secure a decisive victory even on neutral ground in Abidjan.

  • Over 2.5 Goals: Nigeria's preparation matches highlighted immense attacking sharpness and a high scoring output. Their focus on quick attacking transitions and efficiency in front of goal makes a high-scoring encounter very likely.

  • Nigeria U17 Clean Sheet: With heavy tactical emphasis placed on high pressing and structured positional movement during their Ikenne camp, the Flamingos are well-equipped to neutralize the Guinean threat completely and control the tempo from the back.

These qualification first legs are all about setting a commanding tone, and Nigeria's superior preparation and tactical cohesion should give them a distinct edge in this matchup. Check here for betting odds.
