Despite holding a commanding first-leg advantage, Nigeria’s U-17 girls' coach Akeem Busari has warned the Flamingos against underestimating Guinea ahead of Sunday’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier in Ikenne-Remo.
The Flamingos produced a ruthless display in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where they defeated Guinea 5-0 to place one foot in the final round of the qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
However, Busari believes the tie is far from over and has charged his players to maintain full concentration going into the return leg at the Remo Stars Stadium.
The Flamingos have continued intensive preparations since returning from the first leg, with the coaching crew focused on keeping the players mentally sharp despite their comfortable advantage.
Busari admitted that avoiding complacency after such a dominant victory remains a major challenge, stressing that football can quickly punish teams that lose focus.
“It happens in football because when you are ahead of a team in goals and performance, complacency can naturally set in as humans,” Busari said.
The coach added that Guinea still possess the quality and motivation to respond strongly, insisting that Nigeria must approach the encounter with seriousness and discipline.
According to him, the Flamingos are also determined to entertain their home supporters with another impressive display while continuing to improve as a team.
“I see Guinea as a team that can still want to fight back. On our side, we still need to give more because we are playing at home. Our fans want to see the beauty of the game and we want to win excellently,” he added.
Sunday’s fixture offers the Flamingos another chance to reinforce their growing reputation in African women’s football as they edge closer to securing a place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The technical crew expects a disciplined and business-like performance from the team to seal their progression officially. With home support behind them, the players are eager to replicate their dominant form and avoid any tactical slip-ups. A flawless victory on Sunday will provide the perfect momentum needed for the final qualification hurdle.
