The Pharaohs of Egypt edged Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 in an international friendly played at Cairo Stadium on Tuesday, marking the final preparatory match for both teams ahead of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco, set to begin on Sunday.
Nigeria started with an unusual 3-5-2 formation under Coach Eric Chelle for the first time. The team maintained balance and dominated possession in the opening 15 minutes, but the hosts gradually found their rhythm, launching sharp counterattacks that paid off midway through the first half as Egypt took the lead.
Despite the setback, the three-time AFCON champions kept their shape and threatened the Pharaohs’ defense with long balls and quick movements through the middle. Nigeria proved dangerous from set-pieces, and in added time, defender Zaidu Sanusi delivered a cross that Chidozie Awaziem guided into the net to equalize.
In the second half, the Eagles reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, introducing Amas Obasogie in goal along with Ademola Lookman, Cyril Dessers, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi, and Tochukwu Nnadi. Possession was largely balanced, but Egypt struck again from a seemingly offside position. Nigeria protested, but the referee allowed the goal to stand.
The hosts then dropped deep into their own half, successfully frustrating multiple attacks from the Eagles. Coach Eric Chelle was shown a yellow card after disputing several refereeing decisions, including a handball in the Egyptian box that was ignored.
Despite the defeat, Nigeria’s performance showed resilience and attacking promise ahead of the AFCON group stages.
The Super Eagles are set to fly to Fés on Thursday for their Group C matches against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, while Egypt heads to Agadir for Group B games against South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe.
