Aston Villa extended their impressive winning streak to 10 matches across all competitions with a commanding victory over Manchester United at Villa Park, thanks to a brace from in-form striker Morgan Rogers. This marks Villa’s best run in top-flight football since 1914.
Rogers opened the scoring just before halftime with a curling strike into the corner, giving Unai Emery’s side the lead despite not being at their fluent best. United briefly levelled when Matheus Cunha capitalised on a defensive error from Matty Cash, but Rogers struck again, stepping past United defender Leny Yoro before replicating his first goal to make it 2-1. This was his sixth league goal in as many matches.
Emery’s delight was clear, as he theatrically ripped off his coat in celebration, marking only Villa’s second home league victory against United in 27 attempts. The win also moved the Villans to within three points of league leaders Arsenal.
It was a difficult afternoon for United, with head coach Ruben Amorim facing injury woes. Bruno Fernandes went off at halftime after sustaining a hamstring problem, adding to a depleted squad already missing six senior players due to injuries, suspensions, and Africa Cup of Nations duty. Kobbie Mainoo also withdrew before kickoff with a calf issue.
Fernandes’ departure came at a critical juncture, leaving United’s young talents, Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey, to make their debuts as substitutes in the second half. Cunha had United’s best opportunity to equalise but shot wide from close range. The absence of Fernandes is expected to sideline him for a significant period, compounding United’s challenges during this congested fixture schedule.
