Monterrey produced a stunning first-half performance to storm past River Plate in a 4-0 win that ensured their place in the next stage of the Club World Cup. The Mexican side struck three times in just eight minutes before halftime, effectively ending the contest before the break.
Nelson Deossa opened the scoring with a spectacular swerving strike from 35 yards in the 30th minute. Shortly after, German Berterame doubled the lead with a composed finish, taking advantage of a defensive lapse.
The highlight of the night came in the 38th minute when veteran midfielder Jesus Corona unleashed a breathtaking long-range effort that flew past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0. Monterrey capped off the rout in second-half stoppage time, with Berterame netting his second of the night.
With Inter Milan also defeating River Plate 2-0 earlier in the day, Monterrey secured second place in the group standings. They will now face Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday in what promises to be a thrilling semifinal clash.
