Moises Caicedo is determined to repay Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso for the confidence he has shown in him by becoming a more vocal leader on the pitch. The Ecuadorian midfielder returned to the starting lineup after an injury layoff and helped Chelsea secure an emphatic 5-1 victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The 24-year-old is already part of Chelsea’s leadership group at the club’s Cobham training ground, but he believes he can make a greater contribution by communicating more with his teammates during matches. Although speaking up does not come naturally to him, Caicedo is keen to develop this aspect of his game as he continues working under Alonso.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Caicedo said he intended to keep improving under the Spanish coach and demonstrate why he deserved the trust placed in him. He explained that previous managers had encouraged him to communicate more frequently on the pitch, recognising his leadership qualities and the positive influence he could have on the squad.
The midfielder admitted that he sometimes finds it difficult to express himself verbally during games. However, he tries to compensate by setting standards through his performances, hoping his teammates will follow his example.
Caicedo also highlighted the influence of former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva, whom he regards as an outstanding example of leadership. The Brazilian regularly supported his teammates and helped guide the squad, leaving a lasting impression on the Ecuadorian.
Being recognised as one of Chelsea’s captains has given Caicedo a special sense of pride, particularly because of what the responsibility means to his family. While he may not be the most outspoken player in the dressing room, he wants his work rate, attitude and performances to demonstrate his commitment to the team.
His return has also provided a boost for Alonso, who has stressed the importance of Caicedo’s contribution to Chelsea’s midfield balance. After missing much of the opening part of the campaign through injury, the midfielder is now looking to build consistency and take on greater responsibility.
Chelsea, currently sixth in the Premier League standings and eight points behind leaders Manchester City, will aim to maintain their momentum when they travel to face Everton on Saturday.
