Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Arsenal forward Alessia Russo have been named the Football Writers' Association’s Players of the Season for the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Salah enjoyed a standout campaign, contributing 28 goals and 18 assists as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title. His total of 46 goal involvements set a new record for a 38-game Premier League season.
Additionally, Salah played a crucial role in Liverpool’s Champions League run, scoring three goals and providing four assists en route to the last 16.
Salah’s impact was reflected in the voting results, as he earned a remarkable 90% of the votes from more than 900 FWA members — the highest margin of victory in over 20 years. His Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk finished second in the polling, followed by Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Arsenal’s Declan Rice.
With this latest honor, Salah joins Thierry Henry as one of only two players to have won the FWA award three times. The 32-year-old also committed his future to Liverpool by signing a new deal that keeps him at Anfield until 2027.
On the women’s side, Alessia Russo topped the voting to become the second Arsenal player to claim the FWA award, finishing ahead of last year’s winner Khadija Shaw. Russo has been a pivotal figure in Arsenal’s campaign, scoring 12 goals and adding two assists in the Women’s Super League, though the team trails league champions Chelsea by 12 points with one match remaining.
Her performances have also shone on the European stage, where she has contributed eight goals and two assists in Arsenal’s run to the Women’s Champions League final.
Russo’s teammate Mariona Caldentey placed third in the voting, with Chelsea’s Millie Bright coming fourth. Russo’s efforts will culminate on 24 May when Arsenal take on reigning champions Barcelona in Lisbon.
Her consistent performances throughout the season in both domestic and European competitions underscore her growing influence in the women’s game, and the award further cements her status as one of the top players in the league.
