MLS anticipates historic season with Messi's full debut and ambitious goals for Inter Miami

Posted : 20 February 2024

The upcoming 29th season of Major League Soccer (MLS) is poised to become one of the most momentous in the league's history, aligning with a three-year period of heightened global attention on North American football. The region is set to host prestigious international tournaments, including the 2024 Copa America, 2025 Club World Cup, and the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup.

This period coincides with the presence of football icon Lionel Messi in MLS, marking his first full season with the David Beckham-owned franchise Inter Miami after a mid-year transfer in 2023. Messi will be joined by former Barcelona teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.

Suarez, now part of Inter Miami, sets ambitious goals for the team, expressing the aspiration to contend for all five titles available in the upcoming season. While the primary focus is on the MLS Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup, Inter Miami will also enter the Concacaf Champions Cup, the regional equivalent of the Champions League, with a chance to qualify for the 2025 Club World Cup.

The team's entry into the Champions Cup resulted from their triumph in the revamped Leagues Cup, a mid-season competition featuring all MLS and Liga MX teams.

Despite finishing 27th out of 29 teams in MLS last season, Inter Miami's Leagues Cup victory opened avenues for multiple title pursuits. The challenging road ahead includes competition against strong Mexican clubs and fellow MLS teams in the Champions Cup.

Additionally, Inter Miami eyes success in the US Open Cup, the American equivalent of the FA Cup, where they aim to bounce back after their defeat in the final against Houston Dynamo last season. As the season unfolds, attention will be on Messi's impact, team dynamics, and Inter Miami's quest for success across various competitions.

The league begins the season with the challenge of using replacement referees due to a rejected pay agreement by the Professional Soccer Referees Association. Despite this hurdle, the 2024 MLS season promises heightened excitement, featuring a star-studded Inter Miami team and significant aspirations for success in both domestic and international competitions.
