Mikel Arteta Targets Arsenal Dynasty After Premier League Triumph

Posted : 20 August 2026

Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to use their Premier League title success as the foundation for a sustained era of dominance, declaring that the club’s ultimate ambition is to become the best in the world.

Arsenal begin their title defence against newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, marking the first time in 22 years that the Gunners enter a Premier League campaign as reigning champions. They are also attempting to win consecutive English league titles for the first time since the 1930s.

Arteta believes Arsenal now have an opportunity to establish a dynasty following their breakthrough triumph last season. The Spaniard, who previously worked under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, has seen his former club enter a new era after Guardiola's departure, creating an opening for Arsenal to strengthen their position at the top of English football.

The Arsenal manager insists the club's ambitions extend well beyond simply retaining the Premier League crown. He wants improvements across every area of the organisation, including the squad, infrastructure and overall culture, as the Gunners look to establish themselves among Europe's elite.

Arsenal have already demonstrated their determination to maintain their momentum. Their 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City last weekend provided an emphatic statement before the league campaign, with new signing Christos Tzolis supplying two assists.

The club have also strengthened significantly during the transfer window. Brazil international Bruno Guimarães arrived from Newcastle United for around £75 million, while Tzolis joined from Club Brugge. Arsenal have continued exploring further additions, with a deal for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa reportedly agreed at around £51 million.

Arteta is determined to raise standards further after Arsenal came close to European glory last season. Their Champions League campaign ended in defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final, providing additional motivation as they prepare for another attempt to win the competition for the first time.

The task of defending the league title will nevertheless be complicated by significant changes among Arsenal's main competitors. Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca following Guardiola's exit, Liverpool are beginning a new era under Andoni Iraola, while Chelsea have handed the managerial reins to Xabi Alonso.

Manchester United, meanwhile, will try to build on their improved campaign under Michael Carrick. With several traditional contenders undergoing major transitions, Arsenal have an opportunity to establish an early advantage.

Coventry will provide the first test. Frank Lampard's side are back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years and arrive at the Emirates with nothing to lose as they attempt to spoil the champions' opening-night celebrations.

For Arteta and Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, however, the message is clear: last season's title is no longer enough. The Gunners want to repeat their domestic success while adding further trophies, with the long-term goal of turning Arsenal into a dominant force both in England and across Europe.
