Mighty Jets’ Comeback Falls Short in Five-Goal Thriller Against Yobe Desert Stars

Posted : 08 November 2026

Mighty Jets began their 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign with a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Yobe Desert Stars in a thrilling Matchday 1 encounter in Damaturu.

The Jos-based side showed determination and attacking intent throughout the contest but could not recover from a second-half setback, as the hosts held on to claim all three points.

Despite the difficult weather conditions and intimidating home atmosphere, Mighty Jets made an impressive start, taking the lead in the fourth minute through Ukeyima Emmanuel.

His early strike briefly silenced the home supporters and gave the visitors confidence as they looked to take control of the encounter.

Mighty Jets maintained their attacking approach, pressing high and refusing to sit back despite the intense heat and dusty conditions on the pitch.

However, Yobe Desert Stars gradually grew into the game and took advantage of defensive lapses by the visitors to overturn the deficit and establish a 3-1 lead.

Rather than surrendering, Mighty Jets continued to push forward in search of a comeback, showing resilience and determination as the match entered its closing stages.

Their efforts paid off in the 85th minute when Shedrack Musa found the net to reduce the deficit to 3-2, setting up a tense finish.

With the momentum shifting in their favour, the visitors committed more players forward in pursuit of an equaliser. However, Yobe Desert Stars remained organised and resolute at the back to preserve their advantage and secure victory.

Although the defeat denied Mighty Jets a positive start to the new campaign, their performance offered some encouragement, particularly their ability to score twice away from home.

Their early breakthrough and late response also highlighted the fighting spirit and attacking potential needed to compete in Nigeria's challenging second-tier league.

Nevertheless, the result leaves the technical crew with defensive weaknesses to address ahead of their next fixture.

Mighty Jets will now turn their attention to a home encounter against Sokoto United, where they will aim to bounce back from the opening-day disappointment and return to winning ways in front of their supporters.
