Middlesbrough and Southampton Play Out Goalless Draw in Heated Championship Play-Off First Leg

Posted : 09 May 2026

Middlesbrough and Southampton could not be separated as their Championship play-off semi-final first leg ended in a goalless draw at the Riverside Stadium. Despite a dominant start from the home side and a stronger finish from the visitors, neither team was able to find a breakthrough.

The build-up to the match carried added tension following accusations that Southampton had observed a Middlesbrough training session, an incident that has since led to disciplinary action from the EFL. The off-field controversy added further intrigue to an already highly anticipated tie.

On the pitch, Middlesbrough controlled much of the first half and created a series of clear chances. Tommy Conway came closest to scoring when he struck the inside of the post, while Southampton struggled to register a single attempt on goal before the break.

Boro continued to apply pressure, producing 17 shots in total during a one-sided first half. However, despite their dominance, they were unable to convert their chances into a goal, leaving the tie finely balanced at the interval.

Southampton improved significantly after the restart and began to pose more of a threat. Captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis nearly gave them the lead when he powered a header against the crossbar late in the match, while substitute Samuel Edozie also went close with a late effort.

As the game opened up in the second half, both sides had opportunities to snatch a winner, but strong defensive play and missed chances ensured the match remained level. With everything still to play for, the tie now shifts to St Mary’s for the decisive second leg.

Both teams remain confident of reaching the Wembley final, with Middlesbrough disappointed not to make their early dominance count and Southampton encouraged by their improved second-half display.
