Michael O’Neill Applauds Ryan Alebiosu as Blackburn Rovers Secure Vital Point Against Coventry

Posted : 18 April 2026

Blackburn Rovers manager Michael O'Neill has singled out Nigerian fullback Ryan Alebiosu for praise following his display in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Coventry City. The Super Eagles defender was a major injury doubt leading up to the fixture after sustaining a knock during the previous defeat to Southampton. Despite the fitness concerns, Alebiosu played the entire 90 minutes at Ewood Park, proving his importance to the Rovers backline.

The 24-year-old former Arsenal academy graduate was instrumental in the opening goal for the home side. In the 54th minute, Alebiosu embarked on a surging run down the right flank before cutting inside to unleash a powerful strike. While his initial effort was blocked, the ball fell to Ryoya Morishita, who fired home via a deflection to give Blackburn a deserved lead. The contribution highlighted Alebiosu's offensive threat as one of the Championship's most active wing-backs.

Speaking to the club's official media after the final whistle, O'Neill expressed his admiration for the defender’s resilience. The manager noted that Alebiosu was "fantastic" on the flank alongside young teammate Tom Atcheson. O'Neill emphasized that the Nigerian's ability to recover from injury and maintain high performance levels was a testament to his professionalism. However, the manager also voiced his frustration at conceding a late equalizer from a Bobby Thomas header.

The result had significant implications for both ends of the table. While the point confirmed Coventry City’s promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard, it moved Blackburn five points clear of the relegation zone. Rovers currently sit 16th in the standings with only a handful of games remaining. Alebiosu has been a cornerstone of their survival campaign, making 39 appearances this season across all competitions.

The defender's statistics this term include one goal and four assists, reflecting his dual-role impact in O’Neill’s tactical system. His consistency has also caught the eye of the Nigeria national team selectors, cementing his place as a reliable option for the Super Eagles. Blackburn will now look to build on this performance as they aim to mathematically secure their Championship status in the coming weeks.

Rovers will next face a challenging trip as they look to capitalize on the momentum gained from holding the league leaders. O'Neill believes that if his squad maintains the discipline shown against Coventry, they will avoid any late-season drama. For Alebiosu, the focus remains on finishing the season strongly before a summer that could see further interest in his services.
