Michael Carrick Dismisses Manchester United Sack Rumours Ahead of Roma Clash

Michael Carrick has dismissed suggestions that he could have just two matches remaining as Manchester United manager, insisting his attention is firmly on preparing the team for Tuesday's Champions League encounter with Roma.

The 45-year-old is under increasing pressure following United's 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday, a result that extended their winless run across all competitions to nine matches. It is the club's worst sequence without a victory in more than four decades, intensifying questions about Carrick's future at Old Trafford.

With Roma visiting on Tuesday and Aston Villa scheduled to face United on Sunday before the international break, speculation has grown that the two fixtures could determine whether the former midfielder keeps his position.

However, Carrick rejected the suggestion that he was approaching the matches with his job on the line. He said uncertainty about the future would not change his preparations and expressed genuine excitement about the opportunity to get his team back to winning ways.

Carrick also defended the commitment of his players, insisting that the atmosphere inside the dressing room remained positive despite the disappointing results.

He acknowledged that United needed to improve their performances and make better decisions during matches but maintained that the players' dedication to the club and one another was not in question.

The manager was particularly supportive of Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez, who was sent off during the Chelsea defeat. Martinez had also faced criticism following comments about the club's recruitment and investment in the squad.

Carrick insisted that the defender's commitment was never in doubt, describing mistakes and difficult moments as part of football.

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who joined Carrick at Monday's press conference, also backed the manager and expressed confidence that United could recover from their difficult start.

Mainoo acknowledged that the team's results had fallen below expectations but believes a single victory could help restore confidence ahead of several important fixtures.

The upcoming meeting with Roma also brings back positive memories for Carrick. During his playing days under Sir Alex Ferguson, he scored twice in United's memorable 7-1 Champions League quarter-final victory over the Italian club in 2007.

He described that evening as one of the most memorable experiences of his football career, highlighting the atmosphere and emotion surrounding the performance.

United now need a similar level of determination as they attempt to revive their European campaign. Following a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to Como, they face considerable pressure to collect points and improve their position in the Champions League standings.

Despite the mounting criticism, Carrick remains focused on the immediate challenge, believing his players have the ability to change the direction of their season.
