Mexico Begin Gold Cup Defence with Victory Amid US Immigration Tensions

Posted : 15 June 2025

Mexico began their Gold Cup title defence with a narrow 3-2 win against the Dominican Republic on Saturday in Los Angeles, in a match overshadowed by growing political tensions in the United States. The game, held at the SoFi Stadium, came amidst widespread protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and the deployment of the National Guard.

Security concerns forced the Mexican team to change hotels, while Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum made a public appeal urging US authorities to refrain from immigration enforcement at the stadium during the match.

Despite the tense backdrop, fans turned out in strong numbers, with over 54,000 in attendance, most supporting Mexico. On the pitch, West Ham’s Edson Alvarez gave Mexico the lead just before halftime, and Fulham's Raul Jimenez doubled it shortly after the break with his 40th international goal. The Dominican Republic, making their tournament debut, quickly responded through Peter Gonzalez, narrowing the gap and setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

Mexico extended their lead to 3-1 when a header by Alvarez was accidentally deflected into the net by defender Cesar Montes. However, the Dominican side fought back once more as Edison Azcona’s deflected strike kept the pressure on Mexico in the closing minutes. Ultimately, the defending champions held on to secure three points in a match that was as eventful off the field as it was on it.

Following their opening victory, Mexico will now head to Arlington, Texas, and Las Vegas, Nevada, for their next two group stage fixtures. The Gold Cup remains the premier tournament for national teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean, and this year's edition carries not just sporting importance but also political resonance, as immigration debates continue to influence the atmosphere around the tournament.
