Lionel Messi has expressed strong support for Neymar’s potential inclusion in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, insisting the forward remains one of football’s elite players. Despite recent injury setbacks, Messi believes Neymar’s talent and influence make him indispensable when fully fit.
Neymar, Brazil’s record goalscorer with 79 international goals, has not featured for the national team since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2023. Since returning to club football with Santos, his form and fitness have been inconsistent, raising questions about his readiness for international duty.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has stated that Neymar will be considered for selection if he proves his full fitness, giving the forward a limited window to demonstrate his readiness ahead of the tournament.
Speaking on the Lo del Pollo show, Messi emphasized that top players like Neymar should always be part of major competitions. He described it as “wonderful” to see Neymar at the World Cup, highlighting his importance to both Brazil and the sport globally.
Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022 and is expected to feature in his final tournament in 2026, also identified Brazil as one of the leading contenders alongside Spain and France. He noted that Brazil’s depth of talent ensures they remain a serious threat in any major competition.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the tournament scheduled to begin on June 11.
