Messi Scores Stunning Free-Kick but Columbus Crew Defeat Inter Miami 2-1

Lionel Messi produced a spectacular equaliser, but Inter Miami were beaten 2-1 by Columbus Crew after Jamal Thiaré scored deep into stoppage time in their MLS meeting on Sunday.

Columbus took the lead in the 28th minute when Josef Martínez converted from the penalty spot after Yannick Bright brought him down. The goal was Martínez’s first for the Crew since joining the club in August.

Miami responded five minutes later through Messi, who produced a superb free-kick from a tight angle on the right. The Argentina captain’s 21st league goal of the season restored parity and kept the visitors in contention.

Messi nearly completed the turnaround in the second half, but Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made an important save to deny him. Miami also thought they had gone ahead when David Ayala found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Columbus continued to threaten and went close through Anass Zaroury, who struck the woodwork twice. Miami struggled to create clear chances as the hosts remained dangerous in attack.

The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time. Brais Méndez saw his effort from outside the box parried by Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo, but substitute Thiaré reacted quickest to fire the rebound into the net and secure all three points for Columbus.

The defeat left Inter Miami on 46 points and third in the Eastern Conference, while Columbus moved to 29 points, four points outside the playoff places with seven regular-season matches remaining.
