Speculation surrounding Lionel Messi's future has intensified, with fresh reports from Argentina suggesting the global football icon may depart Inter Miami at the end of his current contract in 2025. According to ESPN journalist Esteban Edul, Messi is considering a move to a more competitive league in order to maintain peak physical condition ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States.
The uncertainty has sparked excitement among Barcelona fans, many of whom dream of a sensational return. However, insiders point out that a strained relationship between Messi and Barcelona president Joan Laporta makes such a reunion highly unlikely. Prominent journalist Guillaume Blaguet previously asserted that Messi would not return to the club while Laporta remains in charge.
Edul further stated that although Messi had once been inclined to extend his stay in the U.S., recent negotiations have stalled. “At one point, Leo was ready to extend his contract in the U.S., but those discussions seem to have paused,” he explained.
Despite this, Inter Miami remains optimistic. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported a senior club official's response, which emphasized that both Messi and the club are aligned in their desire to continue their partnership. “Both sides want a contract extension. Discussions are ongoing, and efforts are being made to finalize a new deal,” the official stated.
Messi recently spoke after Inter Miami’s 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup quarter-finals, acknowledging the challenge of facing top-tier European teams. “They’re the Champions League winners for a reason. We knew it would be tough, but we gave our best and left a good impression,” he said.
As the 2025 season approaches, questions loom about whether Messi will commit to Inter Miami long-term or seek one final challenge in a major European or South American league. For now, both the player and the club appear to remain open to continuing their journey together — though the clock is ticking.
