England, Argentina Renew Historic Rivalry in Blockbuster World Cup Semifinal

Posted : 14 July 2026

England stand on the brink of history as they prepare to face reigning champions Argentina in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup semifinal on Wednesday. A victory would send England into their first World Cup final since their famous triumph in 1966, while ending Argentina's quest to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the trophy.

The match also marks the first competitive meeting between the two football giants since the 2002 World Cup. Their rivalry has produced some of football's most unforgettable moments, from Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal in 1986 to David Beckham's red card against Argentina in 1998. The fixture also carries historical significance beyond football because of the long-standing Falkland Islands dispute.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni insisted the focus should remain on football after his side defeated Switzerland 3-1 in the quarterfinals. England, meanwhile, are only one win away from ending a 60-year wait for another World Cup final appearance, while Argentina are chasing a third final in four editions of the tournament.

Lionel Messi believes his team remain motivated despite already achieving remarkable success. The veteran captain praised his teammates for continuing to chase history after lifting multiple major trophies, saying their ambition has never faded. Interestingly, despite his legendary international career, this semifinal will be Messi's first-ever match against England.

Neither nation has enjoyed a straightforward route to the last four. Argentina dominated the group stage but have been pushed to their limits in the knockout rounds. They survived extra time to defeat Cape Verde 3-2, produced a late comeback to overcome Egypt by the same scoreline, and eventually beat a 10-man Switzerland 3-1 after extra time. Although Messi's run of scoring in nine consecutive World Cup appearances ended against Switzerland, Argentina extended their unbeaten World Cup streak to 12 matches since their opening defeat to Saudi Arabia in 2022.

England opened their campaign with an exciting 4-2 victory over Croatia before enduring a series of dramatic knockout fixtures. Harry Kane inspired a late comeback against DR Congo, while Jude Bellingham delivered a match-winning performance against Mexico despite England finishing with 10 men. The Real Madrid midfielder again proved decisive by scoring twice, including the extra-time winner, in England's quarterfinal victory over Norway.

Those performances have carried England into a fourth semifinal in their last five major international tournaments. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford acknowledged Messi's threat but stressed that England must also prepare for Argentina's overall quality rather than focusing solely on the legendary captain.

Argentina enter the contest with one of the tournament's oldest squads, boasting an average starting age of over 30 years against Switzerland. England's younger lineup averaged just 26.6 years in their quarterfinal victory over Norway, potentially giving Gareth Southgate's side an advantage in energy and recovery after several demanding knockout matches.

England are monitoring midfielder Declan Rice, who has been battling illness ahead of the semifinal. Messi, now 39, expressed his excitement about finally facing England, describing them as one of world football's traditional powerhouses and admitting he had never previously played against them despite his illustrious career.

The last encounter between the nations came in a 2005 international friendly, when England claimed a 3-2 victory thanks to two goals from Michael Owen. Messi had only recently made his senior international debut at the time and did not feature in that match, making Wednesday's semifinal a long-awaited chapter in one of football's greatest rivalries.
