Memphis Depay accuses Corinthians of breaching contract renewal agreement

Memphis Depay has launched a strong criticism of Corinthians after the Brazilian club decided not to renew his contract. The Netherlands international claims the club had agreed to extend his stay for another two years before reversing its position.

Depay joined Corinthians in 2024 following his departure from Atletico Madrid and has now become a free agent after his contract expired. The former Manchester United and Barcelona forward said the proposed renewal had been approved by the club president and its sporting, legal and financial departments, but was subsequently withdrawn.

The 32-year-old expressed his frustration on social media, saying he had always respected Corinthians but was now prepared to take action to protect his interests. He also indicated that he would speak publicly about the dispute in the coming days.

During his time in Brazil, Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances and played a key role as Corinthians won the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa Rei in 2026. His departure brings an end to a two-year spell in which he became one of the club's most recognisable players.

Corinthians, however, said its decision was driven by financial considerations. The club explained that taking on another major financial commitment would not be compatible with the economic balance required to maintain its long-term sustainability.

The club added that president Osmar Stabile will address the situation at a press conference in the coming days. That could provide further details about why negotiations over the proposed extension ultimately collapsed.

Depay's departure also comes shortly after the Netherlands' disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign. The country's all-time leading scorer failed to find the net in three appearances as the Dutch were eliminated in the last 32.
