Real Madrid delivered an impressive performance at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, defeating Sevilla 4-1 to strengthen their position in the LaLiga standings ahead of next weekend's El Clasico against Barcelona. Kylian Mbappe scored twice, while Arda Guler and Yan Diomande also found the net for Jose Mourinho's side.
The victory moved Madrid into third place with 21 points, one behind second-placed Atletico Madrid. Barcelona remain six points ahead of their rivals after beating Real Betis 5-2 on Saturday, setting the stage for a crucial encounter between Spain's two biggest clubs.
Madrid began the match without Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior, who was suspended following his dismissal in the previous weekend's game. However, his absence did little to disrupt the hosts' attacking threat, with Guler providing creativity in midfield and Diomande making an impact on the left flank.
After a relatively quiet opening period, Guler broke the deadlock in the 30th minute. Jude Bellingham initiated the attacking move before Diomande supplied the ball to the Turkish midfielder, who produced a superb finish from outside the penalty area to send the ball into the top corner.
Mbappe Produces Moment of Individual Brilliance
Madrid doubled their advantage seven minutes later through Mbappe, who scored one of the game's standout goals. Bellingham helped create the opportunity with a backheel, allowing the French forward to drive towards the Sevilla goal.
Mbappe then displayed excellent close control, using a clever roulette turn to escape his marker before manoeuvring past goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos and finishing calmly.
The forward added his second goal from the penalty spot in the second half after Andres Castrin brought him down inside the area. Mbappe confidently converted with a Panenka-style chip, extending Madrid's lead and taking his league tally to nine goals for the season.
Sevilla Pull One Back but Diomande Seals the Win
Sevilla attempted to respond as the match progressed, and Madrid had to remain alert defensively to prevent the visitors from gaining momentum. Federico Valverde made an important intervention to deny Felix Correia as Sevilla searched for a way back into the contest.
The visitors eventually reduced the deficit through substitute Manu Bueno, who capitalised on a Madrid mistake to score with around 10 minutes remaining.
Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished when Diomande struck two minutes later. The Ivorian winger found space outside the box and unleashed a powerful shot to restore Madrid's three-goal advantage and complete the scoring.
The goal capped an encouraging display from Diomande, who joined Madrid from RB Leipzig during the summer. The Spanish giants will face the German side in their next Champions League fixture.
Real Madrid Turn Attention to El Clasico
The emphatic result provides Madrid with renewed confidence ahead of their showdown with Barcelona next weekend. Mourinho's team has now recorded three consecutive victories across all competitions since the international break, offering encouraging signs as they seek to close the gap at the top of the table.
The match also featured the return of defender Eder Militao, who came on as a substitute late in the second half after recovering from hamstring surgery. His comeback provides a further boost to Madrid as the season enters a demanding period.
Elsewhere in LaLiga, Real Sociedad recorded a commanding 5-2 away victory over Malaga, Celta Vigo defeated Alaves 2-1, and Osasuna earned a 2-0 win against Racing Santander.
With Barcelona maintaining their advantage and Atletico Madrid occupying second place, Madrid's next fixture could prove pivotal in shaping the early title race. Mbappe's outstanding form and the contributions of Guler and Diomande give Mourinho plenty of reasons for optimism as his team prepares for one of the season's biggest matches.
