Mbappe's Hat-Trick Not Enough as Barcelona Defeat Real Madrid 4-3 in El Clasico

Posted : 12 May 2025

Kylian Mbappe delivered a sensational hat-trick in El Clasico, but it wasn't enough to save Real Madrid from a 4-3 defeat to Barcelona, who came from two goals behind to win. Controversial refereeing decisions late in the game arguably favored Madrid, yet Barcelona’s dominance prevailed, leaving Madrid seven points adrift with only three league matches remaining.

The loss marked Madrid’s fourth against Barcelona this season and their 14th defeat overall—a sharp contrast to their trophy-laden 2024 campaign.

This season has exposed the difficulties Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti faced in blending new star Mbappe with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo Goes while maintaining tactical balance.

Mbappe stood out as the lone bright spot in Sunday's loss, his goals lifting him above Robert Lewandowski in the league scoring charts with 27 goals. He also set a new record for most goals by a Madrid player in their debut season with 39, surpassing Ivan Zamorano’s 1993 tally of 37.

Despite Mbappe’s brilliance, Madrid conceded 16 goals across their four losses to Barcelona this season while only scoring seven, five of which came from the Frenchman. Spanish media hailed him as the club’s "flagship" player, noting his consistency even as teammates like Vinicius and Bellingham struggled in major fixtures.

While Mbappe faltered in the Champions League quarterfinals, his hat-trick against Manchester City showed the calibre of performances Madrid expects moving forward.

Ancelotti acknowledged Mbappe’s quality after the Barcelona defeat but criticized the team’s poor defensive showing. With the Italian set to depart and be replaced by Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, a new era is on the horizon. Mbappe is expected to be the focal point of that transition, as Madrid looks to restructure around him while addressing issues in defence and midfield to return to title contention.
