Mbappe's goal propels PSG to French Cup final, keeping treble dreams alive

Paris St-Germain secured their spot in the French Cup final after a hard-fought victory over Rennes, with Kylian Mbappe's goal proving decisive in the semi-final clash. Mbappe broke the deadlock in the 40th minute with a deflected shot that nestled into the bottom corner of the net, despite having earlier seen his penalty saved by Rennes goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

 

Mandanda's heroics denied Mbappe from the penalty spot and also prevented an early goal when he tipped the PSG forward's shot onto the crossbar in the 13th minute. The tense encounter highlighted Mbappe's importance to PSG, especially in what is expected to be his final season for the club before his anticipated move to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

 

With Mbappe's crucial strike, PSG now have the opportunity to clinch their 15th French Cup title in the upcoming final, adding to their recent triumph in the 2020-21 season. Additionally, the victory keeps PSG in contention for a potential treble, as they remain in the race for the Ligue 1 title and continue their pursuit of Champions League glory, where they are set to face Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
