France captain Kylian Mbappé has launched a €240 million damages claim against Paris Saint-Germain, escalating a long-running dispute over the handling of his contract and his treatment during his final season with the club. The case, filed in a Paris labour court, accuses PSG of sidelining the forward and violating professional standards before his eventual move to Real Madrid.
PSG quickly responded with a countersuit worth €180 million, arguing financial loss linked to the collapse of a €300 million transfer offer from Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal — a move Mbappé declined. The club maintains that the rejected deal significantly impacted its financial planning and sporting strategy.
Mbappé, now 26, first lodged a complaint in June, alleging that he was marginalized by the Qatari-owned club at the start of the 2023–24 season after refusing to sign a new contract. He claims he was relegated to training sessions with players listed for sale and excluded from the squad’s pre-season tour of Asia. He also missed PSG’s opening match of that season before eventually returning to the lineup following discussions with club officials.
The dispute highlights a wider issue in French football, where several players have reported similar treatment after refusing contract extensions — prompting the French players’ union to take action last year.
Mbappé ended his seven-year spell in Paris last summer when he joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, signing a contract reportedly worth €30 million per year. During his time at PSG, he scored an astonishing 256 goals in 308 appearances. Despite his departure, PSG claimed their first-ever Champions League title last season, achieving European glory without their former star forward.
