Mbappé Seals Late Win as Real Madrid Beat Valencia; Betis Shock Atlético in La Liga Action

Posted : 09 February 2026

Real Madrid maintained the pressure in the La Liga title race with a disciplined 2–0 victory away to Valencia at the Mestalla. After a cautious opening period in which both sides struggled to impose themselves, Madrid gradually gained control and began to dictate the tempo in midfield. Their breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute when Álvaro Carreras finished confidently from close range, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Valencia pushed forward in search of an equaliser but were left exposed at the back, and Madrid capitalised late on. Deep into stoppage time, Kylian Mbappé capped a swift counter-attack with a composed finish, effectively sealing the points.

The result keeps Carlo Ancelotti’s side firmly in pursuit of league leaders Barcelona and extends their unbeaten run, while Valencia’s struggles continue as they hover dangerously close to the relegation zone amid growing frustration from the home crowd.

Getafe collected an important away win after beating Alavés 2–0 at Mendizorrotza. The visitors struck shortly after the interval when Luis Vázquez found the net to break the deadlock, rewarding Getafe’s organised approach.

Alavés attempted to respond but failed to create clear-cut chances, and their task became harder when Martín Arambarri converted a penalty to double the lead in the latter stages. The victory strengthens Getafe’s position in mid-table, while Alavés remain entrenched near the bottom after another disappointing home performance.

Athletic Club treated the San Mamés crowd to an open and attacking display as they overcame Levante 4–2 in one of the most entertaining games of the day. Guruzeta was the standout performer with two goals, while strikes from Serrano and Navarro gave the hosts a commanding advantage.

Levante managed late responses through Elgezabal and Olasagasti, but the outcome was never truly in doubt as Athletic’s fluid movement and intensity proved decisive.

Sevilla were forced to settle for a point at home after drawing 1–1 with Girona in dramatic fashion. The visitors made a stunning start when Lemar scored in just the second minute, putting Sevilla on the back foot. The hosts pressed relentlessly for an equaliser and were finally rewarded deep into stoppage time when Salas found the net, salvaging a draw that leaves both sides locked in the tightly packed mid-table battle.

At the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Atlético Madrid suffered a surprise home defeat as Real Betis secured a narrow 1–0 victory. Antony’s first-half goal proved decisive, and Betis showed impressive defensive discipline to protect their lead under sustained pressure. Atlético struggled to find a cutting edge in the final third and were left frustrated as Betis claimed a valuable three points away from home.

Sunday’s La Liga fixtures delivered significant results across the table. Real Madrid’s late flourish in Valencia ensured the title race remains intense, Athletic Club impressed with an attacking masterclass, and Real Betis’ win in Madrid stood out as one of the round’s biggest shocks, underlining the growing unpredictability of the season.
