Martins Praises Chelle's Super Eagles Progress But Regrets Missing World Cup

Posted : 08 June 2026

Former Nigeria international frontman Obafemi Martins has lauded the current progression of the Super Eagles under head coach Éric Chelle. However, the legendary forward stressed that the national team's failure to qualify for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup remains an extremely painful reality for the West African nation.

The Super Eagles have enjoyed an impressive resurgence under their Franco-Malian manager, remaining unbeaten in their last five outings. During this encouraging stretch, the team secured three victories and two stalemates while scoring 11 goals; these positive results occurred despite missing star attackers Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

A major highlight of this recent run includes retaining the invitational Unity Cup trophy in London. The Super Eagles produced a fluid attacking display at Charlton Athletic's Valley Stadium to defeat the Jamaican national team 3-0, showcasing immense confidence under Chelle's tactical guidance.

Despite these clear signs of growth, Martins conceded that the heartbreak of missing out on the global showpiece tournament continues to cast a long shadow. The qualification campaign ended in disaster during the African playoff series held in Rabat, Morocco, late last year.

After thrashing Gabon 4-1 after extra time in the semi-finals, Nigeria faced DR Congo in a winner-takes-all playoff final. The tense match finished 1-1 after 120 minutes of football before the Leopards triumphed 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout, condemning Nigeria to a second consecutive World Cup absence.

Reflecting on the situation, Martins expressed his satisfaction with the squad depth and praised the new players for making a strong impact. Nevertheless, the former striker firmly believes the agony of missing the world stage will linger around the national team circle for a very long time.
