Martin Odegaard Fires Arsenal to Hard-Fought Champions League Win at Napoli

Arsenal began their Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Napoli after captain Martin Odegaard produced a decisive late strike at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated possession and created several opportunities but struggled to turn their pressure into goals. Their persistence finally paid off in the 75th minute when Odegaard fired a low effort from the edge of the box that clipped the post on its way into the net.

The result gives Arsenal an important away victory after they reached last season’s Champions League final, where they ultimately fell short against Paris Saint-Germain. The Gunners also maintained their perfect start to the 2026-27 campaign after opening their Premier League title defence with three consecutive wins.

Napoli adopted a cautious approach for much of the contest, looking to frustrate Arsenal and threaten on the counter. David Raya was forced into a few saves, while Alex Meret denied Mikel Merino before being replaced at half-time because of injury.

Arsenal continued to press after the interval, with Piero Hincapie missing a good opportunity before Odegaard finally broke Napoli’s resistance. The Norwegian midfielder combined with substitute Christos Tzolis and Ben White before finding the bottom corner via the post.

Arsenal then had chances to put the match beyond doubt. Noni Madueke saw an effort blocked, while Kai Havertz appeared to have scored in stoppage time before the goal was ruled out for offside.

Odegaard’s goal was his fourth in five matches and continued his impressive start to the season. Arteta’s team will now look to build on the victory as they pursue a deeper Champions League run after last season’s disappointment.

Napoli, meanwhile, suffered a third consecutive defeat and will need to respond quickly as they continue their European campaign.
