Marseille returned to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory over Troyes on Sunday, thanks to second-half goals from Amine Harit and Himad Abdelli. The result ended a difficult run of defeats and lifted the club out of the relegation zone.
Marseille entered the match under considerable pressure after losing four consecutive league games and suffering five defeats across all competitions. With a demanding schedule ahead, the team needed a positive result to restore confidence and halt its decline.
The visitors also had to cope with key absences. Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was unavailable because of an injury sustained during the international break, while captain Timothy Weah missed the encounter through suspension following his dismissal against Paris Saint-Germain.
Harit broke the deadlock five minutes after the interval, finishing from close range after receiving a cross from Emerson Palmieri. The goal gave Marseille a valuable advantage and eased some of the pressure on the travelling side.
Troyes pushed for an equaliser but struggled to convert their opportunities. Marseille eventually secured the points deep into stoppage time when Abdelli converted a penalty, scoring his first goal for the club and confirming the 2-0 win. Troyes came close to reducing the deficit shortly before the final whistle, but Renaud Ripart's volley struck the post.
The victory proved crucial for Marseille, who avoided extending their losing streak and moved up to 13th place in the Ligue 1 standings. The result also provided a timely boost ahead of a busy period that includes a Europa League fixture against Olympiakos.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Rennes climbed to third place after recording a 4-1 win over Auxerre. Esteban Lepaul opened the scoring before Cameron Archer equalised, but Adrien Thomasson restored Rennes' lead and substitute Boulaye Dia scored twice in stoppage time to complete the victory.
Nice also secured three points after coming from behind to defeat Strasbourg 2-1. Dario Essugo gave Strasbourg the lead, but a Pape Demba Diop own goal and a strike from Jonathan Clauss turned the match in Nice's favour.
