Maresca Urges Man City to Ignore Financial Charges After 3-0 Liverpool Win

Posted : 12 October 2026

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has urged his players to focus on winning matches and ignore distractions surrounding the club’s Premier League financial charges after securing a convincing 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

The win came in City’s first match since an independent commission delivered a guilty verdict on more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, leaving the club facing uncertainty over possible sanctions as it appeals the decision.

Maresca, who has made an impressive start to life as Pep Guardiola’s successor, has won all eight of his matches across competitions. The latest victory moved City three points clear at the top of the Premier League, although the eventual outcome of the club’s appeal could have significant implications for its title ambitions.

Reflecting on the pressure surrounding the team, Maresca acknowledged that the circumstances had not been easy for his players but praised their response.

He said the squad needed to learn how to manage external distractions while creating its own positive momentum through results on the pitch. According to the Italian, the supporters’ celebrations at the final whistle demonstrated that City had successfully shifted the focus back to football.

City capitalised on Liverpool’s numerical disadvantage after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 60th minute following two quick yellow cards. Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored within a 13-minute period to seal an emphatic victory.

The result was particularly significant given City’s struggles to win at Anfield in recent years. Maresca described the 3-0 triumph as an important result for the players, coaching staff and the wider club, adding that everyone associated with the organisation needed such a performance.

The City manager also dismissed suggestions that uncertainty over the financial case had reduced his enjoyment of the victory. He stressed that his immediate responsibility was to prepare the team for matches and secure wins, expressing hope that he would be able to discuss the matter more fully once the appeal process was concluded.

Liverpool, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat under manager Andoni Iraola and slipped to ninth place, nine points behind the league leaders. The hosts were also without injured players Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, absences that weakened their attacking options.

Iraola argued that Liverpool had performed better before Gravenberch’s dismissal changed the contest. He described the match as two distinct periods, insisting his team had been the stronger side before the red card, while acknowledging that City dominated and took their chances afterwards.
