Manzambi Punishes Newcastle as Aston Villa Extend Unbeaten Run

Posted : 18 October 2026

Aston Villa midfielder Johan Manzambi delivered another impressive performance on Saturday, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United. The Switzerland international, who recently turned 21, punished the club he rejected before joining Villa in a reported transfer worth just over £50 million.

Manzambi's winning goal came when he found space inside the Newcastle penalty area to meet an excellent cross from Joao Gomes. Unmarked eight yards from goal, the midfielder headed the ball into the net to secure three valuable points for Unai Emery's side.

The result continued Manzambi's impressive start to life at Villa Park. He has already scored against Tottenham Hotspur in a 3-2 victory and found the net in Villa's commanding 6-0 Champions League win over Fenerbahce.

Speaking about his decision to join Villa, Manzambi explained that his experience against the club in last season's Europa League final influenced his choice.

"The team was very good and I played against them in the final. It's a very good team with a big coach and that was perfect for me," he said.

The victory also marked a significant milestone for Emery, who recorded his 100th Premier League win as a manager. It was an important result for Villa after a difficult start to the campaign, during which they collected just one point from their opening four league matches.

Manzambi's influence has grown rapidly since making his first start for Villa against Tottenham on September 19. He has contributed three goals and two assists in all competitions during this period, making him one of the club's most productive attacking players.

His performances have attracted wider recognition. The midfielder was shortlisted for the Kopa Trophy, an award presented to the best young player in world football, following his impressive displays for Freiburg and Switzerland last season.

At Freiburg, Manzambi excelled in carrying the ball forward, creating attacking opportunities and drawing fouls. He also impressed at the World Cup, scoring twice against Bosnia and Herzegovina and contributing a goal and an assist against co-hosts Canada.

Villa manager Emery praised the midfielder's technical ability, intelligence and physical strength after the Newcastle victory.

"He has made a very good impact with his qualities," Emery said. He also highlighted Manzambi's contribution to Villa's defensive work and their ability to compete in physical battles.

Teammate Nicolas Jackson also praised the youngster's potential. The striker expressed confidence that Manzambi would continue improving and hoped they could build a productive partnership at Villa.

Jackson also revealed that he feared a serious injury after a challenge from Newcastle defender Sven Botman. The referee issued a yellow card following the incident, despite a VAR review of the challenge.

Newcastle struggled to find an equaliser despite their efforts after the break. The defeat increased pressure on manager Matthias Jaissle, whose team continued to experience problems in front of goal and defensively.

For Villa, the result extended their unbeaten run in all competitions and offered further evidence of their recovery. The club also maintained their strong Champions League form after the emphatic victory over Fenerbahce.

Manzambi's performance provided another reminder of the value of Villa's summer recruitment. Newcastle had been close to securing his signature, but the midfielder's decision to join Emery's side has already begun to pay dividends.
