Mancini Dismisses ‘Double Contract’ Issue as Manchester City Face Financial Verdict

Roberto Mancini has dismissed questions surrounding an alleged “double contract” from his time as Manchester City manager, saying the matter is the club’s responsibility rather than his.

Mancini was questioned about the issue ahead of Italy’s Nations League meeting with Turkey after reports that an independent commission had found Manchester City guilty of all but one of the 115 financial-rule charges brought by the Premier League. The sanctions have yet to be determined, and the Premier League has not officially published the findings.

The allegations concerning manager and player payments cover the period from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons, which included Mancini’s spell at the Etihad. The Italian managed City from 2009 to 2013, winning the FA Cup in 2011 before guiding the club to their first Premier League title in 44 years in 2012.

Asked about the alleged arrangement, Mancini said the issue had been discussed repeatedly over several years and insisted that it was not his concern.

The claims about Mancini’s remuneration date back to reports published by German magazine Der Spiegel in 2018. Those reports alleged that Mancini received additional payment for consultancy work with Abu Dhabi club Al Jazira alongside his Manchester City salary.

The Premier League’s case against City includes 14 alleged breaches relating to the provision of accurate details concerning player and manager payments between 2009-10 and 2017-18. The wider case also includes allegations relating to financial information, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability rules, and cooperation with the league’s investigation.

City have consistently denied wrongdoing. Following reports of the independent panel’s findings, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said the club remained confident of proving its innocence, while Manchester City stated that the Premier League process was still ongoing and subject to confidentiality.

No sanctions have yet been announced, and reports indicate that Manchester City are expected to appeal the findings. The outcome of any appeal will therefore form part of the continuing process.

Mancini’s comments come as he prepares Italy for their Nations League fixture against Turkey, with the former City boss now focused on his responsibilities as national-team manager.
