Manchester United Unlikely to Appoint Tuchel or Pochettino if Ten Hag Departs

Posted : 11 June 2024

Sources have indicated that Manchester United are unlikely to hire Thomas Tuchel or Mauricio Pochettino if they decide to dismiss Erik ten Hag. While both Tuchel and Pochettino have been considered as potential successors, the club appears to be moving in a different direction regarding their managerial options.

Discussions had been initiated with Tuchel's representatives before the end of the season, but recent meetings suggest that he is no longer a candidate for the role at Old Trafford.

Concerns about Tuchel's suitability for United's evolving structure have emerged, with incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth reportedly preferring a manager who aligns more closely with the recruitment department's vision.

This preference for a "yes" manager over someone who might challenge the existing framework has led to a mutual decision to end talks with Tuchel. Consequently, Tuchel's prospects of managing United have diminished.

Similarly, United's interest in Mauricio Pochettino has waned, despite his availability following his departure from Chelsea. Pochettino, once a leading candidate, is now considered a long shot for the position.

Other candidates have also been approached, including Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi. Meanwhile, Kieran McKenna has committed to Ipswich Town with a new long-term contract, and Gareth Southgate remains focused on leading England in the upcoming Euro 2024.

United's end-of-season review, led by INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, has extended into its third week, leaving Ten Hag uncertain about his future. Despite this, club officials maintain that their summer plans are progressing, with technical director Jason Wilcox, director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves, and chief scout Steve Brown actively working on player transactions.

Efforts to strengthen the squad are ongoing, particularly in the pursuit of strikers and center-backs. Additionally, United aims to bolster their summer budget by considering permanent transfers for Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood, prioritizing permanent deals over loan arrangements.
