Manchester United triumphs 2-0 over Wigan in FA Cup, easing pressure on manager, Erik ten Hag

Posted : 09 January 2024

Manchester United secured a 2-0 victory against League One side Wigan in the FA Cup third round, alleviating the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. Diogo Dalot's first-half goal and a contentious penalty converted by Bruno Fernandes propelled United to their first away win since November.

The favorable fourth-round draw pits them against either non-league Eastleigh or Newport County, offering a potential lifeline for Ten Hag's struggling squad in their quest for silverware this season.

Despite an early test for goalkeeper Andre Onana, United gradually asserted control, with Marcus Rashford providing the assist for Dalot's well-placed shot. While the visitors dominated the first half, hitting the crossbar twice through Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, the scoreline remained close.

Ten Hag acknowledged the missed chances but commended his team's focus, stating, "We should have taken more, but if you don't score you have to stay focused, and I think we did that tonight."

The controversial second goal arrived in the 74th minute when Fernandes capitalized on minimal contact to win a penalty, subsequently converting it. Wigan, feeling aggrieved, witnessed any hopes of an upset dashed by the Portuguese midfielder.

Looking ahead, United aims to carry positive momentum into the Premier League winter break, facing Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Ten Hag, recognizing the club's optimism following British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's investment, emphasized resilience in the face of setbacks, declaring, "It is a journey, it is a project, and now we have had to deal with some setbacks, but we will keep alive, survive it, and strike back."
