Manchester United Held by Wolves Despite Injuries – Amorim Sees “No Excuses”

Posted : 31 December 2025

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Premier League strugglers Wolves at Old Trafford, a result that left manager Ruben Amorim insisting there were “no excuses” for failing to secure all three points.

Wolves earned only their third point of the season and their first since Rob Edwards’ appointment on November 12, highlighting the unexpected nature of the result.

Amorim’s squad was heavily depleted, missing key players including captain Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Noussair Mazraoui, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire.

Despite these absences, he emphasized that Manchester United should still have defeated a side that has not won a league match since April. “We didn’t use that excuse against Newcastle and we are not going to use it today,” Amorim said, noting the challenges of playing with limited options but stressing accountability.

The manager reverted to his usual 3-4-3 formation against Wolves, after using a back four in the Boxing Day win over Newcastle. Amorim explained the tactical decision, taking into account Wolves’ setup with five at the back and their use of width.

He added that once injured players and those returning from the Africa Cup of Nations are back, Manchester United’s fluidity and attacking cohesion are expected to improve. United will look to bounce back when they travel to face Leeds in their first Premier League game of 2026 on January 4.
