Manchester United’s struggles intensified on Sunday after they suffered a damaging 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick and leaving the club just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight matches across all competitions and dropped them to 16th in the standings. Bournemouth, meanwhile, produced an impressive performance to secure another convincing victory at Old Trafford under manager Marco Rose.
Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson condemned United to their third 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford in four seasons, highlighting the scale of the problems facing the 20-time English champions.
Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the match attracted particular attention. The Portuguese midfielder had criticised the manager’s tactics following United’s 4-1 defeat to Como earlier in the week, prompting questions about whether his omission was purely tactical.
Carrick insisted that the decision was based solely on footballing considerations, but Fernandes’ continued absence became a major talking point as United struggled to respond to Bournemouth’s dominance.
Bournemouth took control in the 38th minute when Rayan finished from close range after connecting with Justin Kluivert’s free-kick. Five minutes later, Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors’ advantage after Leny Yoro lost his footing under pressure from Adrien Truffert, allowing the Bournemouth full-back to set up a simple finish.
Carrick made changes at half-time in an attempt to revive United’s performance, but the hosts continued to struggle. Evanilson briefly had a goal ruled out for offside before eventually scoring in the 71st minute, rounding goalkeeper Senne Lammens and curling the ball into the unguarded net from a tight angle.
United created little in response, while Bournemouth threatened to extend their lead further. The travelling supporters taunted Carrick with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” as the home side endured another miserable afternoon.
Carrick uncertain about Manchester United future
Following the defeat, Carrick admitted that he was unsure what would happen next but insisted that his priority remained doing what was best for Manchester United.
The manager acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and said he would continue carrying out his responsibilities while awaiting the club’s next decision.
Despite the poor results, some United supporters showed sympathy for Carrick at full-time, while much of the anger was directed towards the club’s ownership and leadership. However, the manager’s position remains under increasing scrutiny following the team’s prolonged winless run.
Carrick was appointed on a two-year contract in May after guiding United to third place during a successful interim spell last season. That progress has not carried into the current campaign, with the team struggling to reproduce the consistency and confidence they previously displayed.
The manager acknowledged that last season’s finish was a positive achievement but stressed that he had understood the squad still required considerable improvement. He admitted that the current decline was not what he expected.
United’s immediate challenge is to halt their slide and move away from the relegation zone. However, after another heavy defeat and growing concerns over the relationship between the manager and senior players, Carrick faces mounting pressure to find a solution.
