Manchester United are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with discussions progressing toward a deal worth an initial £35 million plus add-ons, according to multiple sources.
The 26-year-old Brazilian is now emerging as United’s leading target to become their first signing of the summer transfer window, as the club looks to strengthen its midfield options following recent squad changes.
United officials have publicly played down claims that an agreement has been reached, but internal expectations suggest the transfer is moving closer to completion. Ederson has one year remaining on his current contract, making him a realistic target for a summer move.
The club’s push in the market comes alongside the announcement of strong financial results, with third-quarter profits reported at £37.7 million. Despite this, United still carry significant outstanding transfer-related debts, highlighting the financial balancing act behind their recruitment strategy.
Midfield reinforcements are a priority for head coach Michael Carrick, especially following the departure of Casemiro and uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future at Old Trafford. The club are believed to be targeting at least two midfield additions this summer.
While alternatives such as Elliot Anderson have been considered, competition from Manchester City has complicated United’s pursuit of other targets, increasing the urgency around the Ederson deal.
The Brazilian international, who has earned caps for his country but missed out on recent World Cup selection, has been a consistent performer in Serie A since joining Atalanta, following his earlier spell at Salernitana.
Elsewhere in the transfer market, Barcelona are reported to have agreed a major deal with Newcastle United for winger Anthony Gordon, in a move worth over £69 million. The England international is expected to complete formalities before linking up with the national team for a pre-World Cup training camp.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are preparing for a squad rebuild after a disappointing domestic season, with the sale of Gordon providing significant funds for reinvestment. The forward, under contract until 2030, had long been viewed as one of the more likely high-profile departures from St James’ Park.
