Posted : 12 February 2024

In a thrilling encounter, Manchester United secured a crucial 2-1 victory against Aston Villa, with Scott McTominay's late header proving to be the match-winner. The win marked United's third consecutive victory and lifted them to sixth place in the Premier League standings with 41 points.

McTominay, who has become the league's highest-scoring substitute this season with seven goals, emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency and not getting ahead of themselves. Manager Erik ten Hag praised McTominay's exemplary attitude, highlighting his readiness to make a difference whenever called upon.

Rasmus Højlund opened the scoring for United in the 17th minute, converting Harry Maguire's header. Despite several impressive saves from United's goalkeeper André Onana, Douglas Luiz managed to equalize for Villa in the 67th minute.

However, McTominay, entering the match in the 73rd minute, sealed the victory with a powerful header from Diogo Dalot's precise cross in the 86th minute. The win brought joy to Ten Hag, who celebrated the team's resilience and fighting spirit.

McTominay expressed his confidence in contributing to the team whenever he is fit and healthy. The Scottish midfielder acknowledged the superb teamwork, particularly praising the quality of Dalot's cross that set up his winning goal.

Despite Villa having more shots on target and possession, United secured the crucial three points. Captain Harry Maguire acknowledged the team's need to make matches easier but celebrated McTominay's consistent impact as a match-winner. Villa manager Unai Emery admitted the result was tough to accept, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of football.
