Manchester City Verdict Creates Uncertainty Over Players’ Futures, Transfer Plans

Posted : 02 October 2026

The Manchester City verdict has raised questions over player retention, contract renewals and future transfer activity as the club prepares to appeal.

An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. The club has consistently denied wrongdoing and is expected to appeal the findings.

While attention has largely focused on the possible sporting punishment, the verdict could also have significant consequences for City’s current squad and recruitment plans. The club faces uncertainty over its future status while the sanctions process and appeal remain unresolved.

A potential relegation would naturally lead some players to consider their positions, particularly given the international profile of City’s squad. However, most players are understood not to have specific relegation release clauses, meaning the club would retain control over their registrations and could demand substantial transfer fees.

City would also face a financial challenge if they were removed from the Premier League. Their wage bill is among the highest in football, and maintaining those salaries without top-flight revenues could become more difficult. Players' contracts are generally understood to be fully guaranteed, meaning relegation would not automatically result in salary reductions.

Contract renewals could become another complicated issue. Players may prefer to wait until the eventual sanctions are known before committing to new deals, while any relegation protection would have to be negotiated as part of a new contract rather than added retrospectively.

City's immediate contract situation is not considered especially urgent, with Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes, Marcus Bettinelli and Geronimo Rulli among those whose current deals expire within the next two summers. FIFA is also preparing rules requiring contracts signed from January 1, 2027 to contain release clauses.

Recruitment could prove even more challenging. Potential signings would have to weigh the possibility of joining a club facing sporting sanctions, although City's financial resources could still allow them to offer attractive contracts. One option could involve substantial salaries alongside release clauses that would become active if the club failed to return to the Premier League within a specified period.

The Premier League has not yet announced City's punishment. Its statement said sanctions will be dealt with separately by the independent commission, while City have until Friday, October 2, to lodge an appeal.

Until the sanction and appeal processes are resolved, uncertainty is likely to remain around City's ability to retain their squad, renew contracts and attract new players. The commission's ruling found City guilty of serious financial breaches, while the club maintains that the decision contains errors and intends to challenge it.
