Manchester City Reportedly Found Guilty of 114 Financial Breach Charges

Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against the club by the Premier League, according to a report by The Athletic. The club is expected to appeal, while the punishment has yet to be decided.

The case dates back to February 2023, when the Premier League referred more than 100 alleged breaches concerning City’s financial conduct between 2009 and 2018 to an independent commission. The allegations include claims relating to financial reporting, payments to players and coaches, UEFA regulations and the league’s profitability and sustainability rules.

City have consistently denied the allegations. In a statement reported by The Athletic, the club said the proceedings remain ongoing and stressed that significant stages of the process are still to be completed. The club’s position remains consistent with its response when the charges were initially announced.

The potential consequences will depend on the eventual ruling on punishment. Under Premier League regulations, sanctions can range from a reprimand or financial penalty to points deductions or suspension from the competition. Any punishment would be subject to the relevant appeal process.

The case is separate from the UEFA proceedings that followed leaked financial documents published by Der Spiegel in 2018. UEFA imposed a two-year European competition ban and a €30 million fine on City in 2020, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the suspension several months later. City were nevertheless fined £8.8 million for failing to cooperate with UEFA’s investigation.

The latest development comes as City continue to compete at the top of English football. Since Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2008, the club has won multiple Premier League titles and domestic trophies, as well as the Champions League.

The reported verdict also adds to City’s ongoing legal disputes with the Premier League. The club previously faced proceedings over the league’s associated-party transaction rules, with the two sides reaching an agreement on that matter in September 2025.

City’s current sporting situation adds further interest to the case. The club began the 2026/27 Premier League campaign strongly under new manager Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s departure, with significant spending during the summer transfer window.
