Manchester City Make Late Push for Enzo Fernandez as Arsenal Chase Julian Alvarez

Posted : 01 September 2026

Manchester City are making a late attempt to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, while Arsenal remain determined to land Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez before the transfer deadline.

City have made a move for Fernandez after Chelsea placed a valuation of around £120 million on the Argentina international. The midfielder has been left out of Chelsea's recent squads amid the uncertainty surrounding his future, while City manager Enzo Maresca is keen to reunite with the player he previously coached at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez has emerged as a priority target as City reshape their midfield following several departures. The club have also agreed a deal worth up to £65 million for Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye, who was previously being pursued by Tottenham.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are pushing to complete a deal for Alvarez after spending much of the summer pursuing the former Manchester City striker. The Argentina international reportedly favours a move to Barcelona, while Atletico Madrid have been reluctant to sell him to their LaLiga rivals, potentially giving Arsenal an opening.

The Gunners have strengthened their position by completing major outgoing deals, including the departures of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus. However, Atletico are understood to want a substantial fee for Alvarez, leaving Arsenal with little time to reach an agreement before the window closes.

The final hours of the window are also seeing major movement elsewhere. Liverpool have completed the signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, while Cody Gakpo is expected to remain at Anfield after City saw an £80 million proposal rejected.

With the Premier League deadline set for 11pm BST on Tuesday, September 1, both City and Arsenal face a race against time to complete potentially transformative deals.
