Manchester City Defender Amarachukwu Nwankwo Earns England Call-Up For U17 European Championship

Posted : 30 April 2026

Manchester City youth prospect Amarachukwu Nwankwo has officially been named in the England squad for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Under-17 European Championship. Head coach Kerri Welsh confirmed the 21-player roster on Wednesday as the Young Lionesses prepare for the tournament in Northern Ireland. Nwankwo is one of eight defensive players selected to represent the national side in this prestigious continental competition.

The talented defender remains eligible to represent Nigeria through her parents despite her current involvement with the English youth setup. She could still choose to play for the Super Falcons later in her career. To do so, she would eventually need to go through a formal process to change her sporting nationality with FIFA. Nwankwo is following a similar path to current Nigeria star Ashleigh Plumptre, who played for England at the U17 level in 2015 before switching.

Nwankwo played a significant role during the qualification phase for this tournament. She made her competitive start against Turkey as a substitute before moving into the starting lineup for crucial matches against Croatia and Italy. England arrives at the finals in excellent form after winning all six of their qualifying fixtures. They are the only nation in the competition to reach the finals with a perfect winning record.

England has been placed in a challenging Group A for the tournament. They will face the host nation, Northern Ireland, along with traditional powerhouses Germany and Norway. Their opening match is scheduled against the hosts on May 4 at Inver Park. The team must finish in the top two of their group to reach the semi-finals. Success in this tournament also offers a path to the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Manchester City starlet becomes the latest Nigeria-eligible player to feature for England’s U17s. She joins the likes of Omotara Junaid and Jane Oboavwoduo, who represented the Young Lionesses during the 2024 edition. Coach Welsh expressed great pride in the squad's achievement in qualifying. She emphasized that the experience would be vital for the development of the young players. The tournament will conclude with the final at Windsor Park in Belfast on May 17.
