Manchester City delivered a commanding performance to defeat Juventus 5-2 on Thursday in Orlando, clinching the top spot in Group G of the FIFA Club World Cup. Jeremy Doku led the charge in a thrilling display, supported by sharp teamwork and defensive errors from the Italian side. With this win, City became the only team to win all three group-stage matches and set up a Round of 16 showdown against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal.
Doku opened the scoring for City in the 9th minute with a moment of composure, stopping just short of the goal before rifling the ball into the top-right corner. Although Juventus responded almost immediately through Teun Koopmeiners in the 11th minute to level the score, City quickly regained control. A mishap from Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu turned a cross from Savinho into an own goal, putting City ahead 2-1 by the 26th minute.
The second half saw City stretch their lead. Just minutes after entering the match, Erling Haaland notched his 300th career goal for club and country in the 52nd minute, thanks to a clever assist from Matheus Nunes. Phil Foden, coming off the bench in the 66th minute, made an instant impact by tapping in the fourth goal three minutes later. Savinho sealed the victory with a powerful rebound strike in the 75th minute after Haaland’s header struck the crossbar.
Juventus managed to reduce the margin late in the match, with Dusan Vlahovic scoring on a breakaway in the 84th minute, marking his second goal in consecutive games. However, the damage had already been done.
With both teams entering the fixture level on two wins each, City’s emphatic victory propelled them to the top of the group with nine points and 13 goals across three matches—more than any other team in the tournament. Juventus, finishing second in the group, will now face Group H winner Real Madrid in Miami Gardens on Tuesday.
This win marked Manchester City’s first outright triumph over Juventus since 1976 and confirmed their status as title contenders in the tournament. The Premier League champions will remain in Orlando, where they will take on Al Hilal in the Round of 16 on Monday.
