Manchester City Complete £125m Enzo Fernandez Signing from Chelsea

Posted : 02 September 2026

Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British record £125 million, ending one of the summer's longest-running transfer sagas.

The deal matches the British transfer record set by Liverpool for Alexander Isak last summer. Fernandez has signed a five-year contract with City, becoming the first player to command transfer fees of more than £100 million on two separate occasions after his £107m move from Benfica to Chelsea in 2023.

City's pursuit reflected their determination to land a midfielder wanted by manager Enzo Maresca. Fernandez is now reunited with Maresca, who previously worked with him at Chelsea, while the move forms part of City's major midfield rebuild following the departures of several key players.

The transfer was complicated by the strained relationship between the two clubs following Maresca's departure from Chelsea. City nevertheless persisted with the deal and eventually agreed to meet Chelsea's valuation, with the £125m fee giving the London club an £18m profit on their original investment in the Argentine.

Chelsea had planned to replace Fernandez with Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, but that deal collapsed at the end of the transfer window. Despite having the option to reconsider Fernandez's departure after losing their intended replacement, Chelsea honoured their agreement with City and completed the sale.

The signing is another major investment in City's revamped squad after they also spent £116m on Elliot Anderson and brought in Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye. The club's aggressive spending underlines their ambition to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title after a busy summer of squad rebuilding.
