Manchester City Appoint Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s Successor

Posted : 29 June 2026

Manchester City have appointed Enzo Maresca as their new head coach, ushering in a new chapter following the departure of Pep Guardiola at the end of last season. The Italian has signed a three-year contract after lengthy negotiations brought an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the managerial vacancy.

Maresca returns to familiar surroundings, having previously served as one of Guardiola's assistants during Manchester City's historic 2022-23 treble-winning campaign. He also guided the club's Elite Development Squad to the Premier League 2 title during an earlier spell with the academy.

Speaking after his appointment, the 46-year-old said he was delighted to return to a club he knows well. He praised City's structure, describing it as one of the best-run organizations in football, and said its clear vision and long-term planning provide the ideal environment for a manager to succeed.

The move had been expected ever since reports emerged that Guardiola could leave the club. However, Maresca's appointment was delayed after Chelsea reportedly demanded around £17 million in compensation because the Italian remained under contract until 2029 despite leaving Stamford Bridge in January.

Chelsea also released a statement explaining that Maresca had informed club officials earlier in the season that he could become a candidate to replace Guardiola if the opportunity arose. The London club acknowledged feeling disappointed after his unexpected departure midway through the campaign.

Maresca now inherits the responsibility of restoring Manchester City to the top of English football after two consecutive seasons without lifting the Premier League trophy. Although Guardiola won both the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season, City finished second in the league, seven points behind champions Arsenal.

The former Juventus and West Bromwich Albion midfielder brings experience from both the Championship and Premier League. He led Leicester City back to the top flight before taking charge of Chelsea, where he enjoyed an encouraging first season by guiding the Blues to a fourth-place finish while winning both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite that success, his time at Chelsea ended abruptly on New Year's Day. Several senior players, including Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella before his subsequent move to Real Madrid, reportedly expressed disappointment over Maresca's exit.

Widely regarded as one of Guardiola's most devoted tactical disciples, Maresca has built his coaching philosophy around possession-based football, structured build-up play and meticulous attention to detail. Those qualities convinced City that he is the ideal candidate to continue the footballing identity established under Guardiola.

Replacing one of the most successful managers in football history will be a formidable challenge. Guardiola spent a decade at the Etihad Stadium, winning 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, before stepping down, citing a lack of energy to continue after ten years in charge.

City's hierarchy hopes Maresca can replicate the success Arsenal enjoyed by promoting another former Guardiola assistant, Mikel Arteta, into one of Europe's leading coaches.

The new manager is also expected to oversee significant activity in the transfer market as he begins reshaping the squad. Reports suggest City are close to completing a club-record move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson while continuing to pursue Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi as part of their summer recruitment plans.

Maresca now begins the task of building on Guardiola's remarkable legacy while attempting to return Manchester City to the summit of both English and European football.
