Man United Eyes More Than Champions League Return as Carrick Era Gains Momentum

Posted : 08 April 2026

Manchester United assistant manager Steve Holland has stressed that the club’s ambitions extend beyond merely securing a spot in next season’s Champions League.

With just seven matches remaining in the Premier League, United have climbed to third place under Michael Carrick’s guidance and are on course to return to Europe’s top competition after a year-long absence.

Holland emphasised the team’s focus on performance rather than standings, stating, “The language we should be using at this club is to finish as close as we possibly can to the top. Winning matches is the priority, not obsessing over what happens below us.” He added that while Champions League qualification would be positive, the squad should always aspire for more than just meeting the minimum expectation.

United’s revival under Carrick has been remarkable, with the side losing only once since he took charge in mid-January. The club’s prospects have also been boosted by Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, which ensures the Premier League will have at least five clubs in Europe’s elite competition next season. United currently hold a seven-point cushion over sixth-placed Chelsea.

The team has spent the week in a training camp outside Dublin, taking advantage of the unusual 24-day gap between their 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on March 20 and Monday night’s clash with Leeds at Old Trafford. Holland explained that the extended break, caused by the international window and United’s early cup exits, was ideal for regrouping the squad and preparing for a strong finish to the campaign.

“The gap between Bournemouth and Leeds has been massive, probably a Premier League record,” Holland said. “It was important to get the whole group together, refocus, and ensure we finish the season well. This camp was the perfect setting for that.”
