Mary Mamudu’s brace inspired reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) champions Edo Queens to a 3-0 victory over C2E Sports Academy of Abia State in the Governor Douye Diri Women’s Pre-Season Tournament.
Edo Queens, under coach Moses Aduku, produced a composed performance despite heavy rainfall at the Government House Polo Field to secure their first victory of the tournament.
Mamudu broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a superb free kick from outside the box that struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the net.
C2E Sports Academy responded with determination, with the young Abia side refusing to be overwhelmed by their more experienced opponents.
Edo Queens, however, continued to control proceedings and eventually doubled their advantage through Mamudu in the 56th minute.
The second goal further strengthened Edo Queens’ grip on the contest, although C2E continued to fight for a way back into the game.
The Abia-based side showed flashes of promise and created opportunities in their attempt to reduce the deficit, but Edo Queens’ experience enabled them to maintain control.
Dominance Oluwakemi completed the scoring in the 89th minute, putting the result beyond doubt and handing Edo Queens a convincing 3-0 victory.
The result lifted Edo Queens to the top of Group A with four points from two matches.
Hosts Bayelsa Queens occupy second position with three points, while the group’s other teams continue to battle for favourable positions ahead of the remaining fixtures.
Despite the defeat, C2E Sports Academy earned praise for their spirited display, with the newcomers demonstrating the potential to become a competitive force in the future.
Edo Queens will next face hosts Bayelsa Queens on Tuesday in what promises to be a crucial Group A encounter.
Edo Queens had earlier opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Delta Queens of Asaba on Friday, October 2.
In another encounter, Delta Queens defeated Imo Strikers 3-2 in a closely contested match, while Bayelsa Queens observed a bye.
