Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Nigeria’s Remo Stars 5–1 in Abeokuta, securing a historic first win in Nigeria.
South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a stunning performance on Sunday, crushing Nigeria’s league champions Remo Stars 5–1 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round encounter.
The match, played at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, saw the 2016 African champions, nicknamed Bafana ba Style, completely dominate proceedings against the home side.
It was a historic victory for the South African giants, who had never previously won a competitive match on Nigerian soil. In earlier visits, they had fallen to clubs like Lobi Stars and Enyimba, but this time, the team showed remarkable composure, control, and attacking efficiency from start to finish.
Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a superb long-range strike, before Namibian striker Peter Shalulile doubled the lead just before halftime.
Remo Stars tried to fight back after the break, but Sundowns continued their relentless attack. Miguel Reisinho made it 3–0, and Arthur Sales added a fourth with 15 minutes left on the clock.
The home crowd finally had something to celebrate when Samson Olasupo scored a consolation goal for Remo Stars, but substitute Katlego Ntsabeleng restored the four-goal cushion with a late fifth, sealing an emphatic victory.
The 5–1 win gives Mamelodi Sundowns a commanding advantage heading into the return leg in Pretoria, where they are heavily favored to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.
This dominant display serves as a statement of intent from the South African champions, signaling their determination to challenge strongly for the 2025/2026 CAF Champions League title.
