Malawi Scorchers Receive Gas Stoves for Historic WAFCON Achievement

Posted : 14 October 2026

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has rewarded the Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers, with gas cylinders and cooking stoves following their historic performance at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The presentation took place at MERA’s offices in Lilongwe on Saturday, October 10, after the ceremony was postponed because of the team’s commitments following its return from Morocco.

The Scorchers made history at the tournament by reaching the final on their WAFCON debut. Their run also secured Malawi’s first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will take place in Brazil in 2027.

MERA Chief Executive Officer Dad Chinthambi said the donation was intended to recognise the players’ achievements and the pride they brought to the country. He praised their determination, discipline and hard work against some of Africa’s strongest teams.

Chinthambi also explained that the Authority wanted to give the players something practical that they could use in their homes. The gesture formed part of MERA’s effort to honour the team after its remarkable campaign.

According to local reports, the donation included 48 liquefied petroleum gas cylinders and stoves. MERA also linked the initiative to its wider efforts to promote cleaner cooking options and encourage the use of liquefied petroleum gas instead of charcoal and firewood.

Scorchers vice-captain Temwa Chawinga welcomed the recognition and thanked MERA for supporting the team. She said the gesture would encourage the players to continue working hard and representing Malawi with commitment.

The donation followed a campaign in which Malawi defeated established opponents, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana and Algeria, before facing Cameroon in the final. Cameroon won the title with a 3-0 victory, but Malawi’s runners-up finish secured a place in the country’s football history.

The recognition also came amid the Scorchers’ pursuit of another milestone. Malawi had beaten Zimbabwe 2-0 in the first leg of their African qualifying tie for the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The team was set to travel to Zimbabwe for the return leg, aiming to protect its advantage and advance to the next round. The Olympic qualifying campaign gives the Scorchers another opportunity to build on the progress made at WAFCON and strengthen Malawi’s growing presence in women’s football.
