Malawi Coach Maggie Chombo Unveils Final Squad for Decisive Falconets Qualifier in Nigeria

Posted : 01 May 2026

Malawi’s U-20 Women’s National Team head coach, Maggie Chombo, has officially named a 20-player traveling roster for the final qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. The squad is set to face Nigeria’s Falconets in a two-legged playoff that will determine which nation secures a spot at the global tournament in Poland. The first leg is scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The final list consists of three goalkeepers, five defenders, eight midfielders, and four attackers. Coach Chombo has prioritized continuity by retaining the core of the team that comfortably defeated Guinea-Bissau 6-2 on aggregate in the previous round. The traveling party is headlined by four players who have already earned caps for the senior national team, the Scorchers. These include influential midfielders Leticia Chinyamula and Olivia Phikani, alongside Sarah Mlimbika and goalkeeper Esther Maulidi.

The Young Scorchers have been in intensive preparations at Mpira Village in Blantyre to ensure they are physically ready for the West African climate. Chombo emphasized that her selection was based on recent form and tactical adaptability. She highlighted the importance of having senior experience within the youth setup to manage the pressure of playing in Nigeria. The coach believes the blend of youth and experience will be vital for a positive result in Ikenne.

Nigeria’s Falconets enter this tie as strong favorites, having qualified for every edition of the tournament since 2002. However, the Malawi technical bench remains optimistic about pulling off an upset against the two-time finalists. Following the first-leg encounter, Malawi will return home to host the reverse fixture on May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The aggregate winner of this tie will join three other African nations to represent the continent in Poland later this year. The global competition is slated to run from August 27 to September 26, 2026.
